This Empty House

This empty house once filled with life
Now relic bathed in memories
Of daily laughter and of strife
That dwelled beneath the silent eves

This was my home, my youthful world
Abode for child , for dog and dove
And in its vacant rooms unfurl
The fullness of a family’s love

Three stories tall of echoes loom
Of dormered dreams and sibling thread
That bind each child from room to room
And table where the heart was fed

The stairs lead to the secret nooks
Where hidden heads of blondish curls
Played hide and seek in fairy books
On rainy days of giddy girls

A stairway to the musty board
Of attic floor and treasured box
Where harbored memories were stored
In ribbon bows with dainty locks

T‘was here I came to clear remains
And remnants of the ones who dwelt
Beneath this roof in pattering rains
That equaled tears of passion felt

The hours spent unfolding yellow
Pages traced with love filled ink
And sentiments so pure and mellow
Of a heart on lover’s brink

Endowed my soul with joy and peace
From love on which my parents thrived
And etched within a paper crease
Beneath these eves was kept alive

I cannot stay, for other hearts
Will now abide within these walls
And as I linger to depart
A voice from off the mantle calls

And draws my eyes toward the space
Where family portrait in a frame
Once stood in its forever place
And there forever it remains

Liz, it does hurt, doesn't it? I know.

Sy, Yep, I just love to babble!

Ethel, sometimes it is hard to let go of a house. Thanks

Liz...I remember when I made this trip full of ghost from the past.  Heart hugs for seeing it with such beauty, and sharing it.

Leaving a home is hard when you have fond memories left in each and every room. Cont' to take those memories and put them in the beautiful words of poetry. When you move into your new home capture new memories and begin again writing your new memories on a canvas of white and love.
Good one.
