I decided to repost this one, from long ago
after reading a recent post by Martina called
"when will I be able to be normal" in the
hope that it may help her.I have never
been in a wheelchair myself or don't know
anyone who is but I just tried to imagine
how it must be for those who are.

* * *

You seem to find it difficult
To look at me in this chair
You're unable to hold my gaze
As your eyes dance here and there

Sure my life is somewhat different
I spend the most part sitting down
Other than that we are quite similar
I'm not like a freak show clown

I've learned to accept my disability
But I get tired of all the stares
I don't wallow in self pity
For I have already been there

So next time you're passing by me
Please just smile and say "G'day"
Don't avoid me like the plague
And please don't treat me like a stray

"The most emotionally healthy people
in our society are able to put
themselves into other people's shoes,
know how someone else is feeling
and care about that.
This capacity extends beyond
sexual and family intimacy.
It creates a circle of genuine feeling
that can extend, eventually,
to all of humankind."

I am in motion
I am blue
Love is an ocean
I'm anchored in you

Hello Martina

I am so very grateful for your comment and thank you so much for taking the time to read my words.  I have since written two more poems on the same subject called "I'm Handicapped By You" and "My Disability Is Not A Curse".  I recently began doing some volunteer work and we were shown a video about how disabled people are treated in society and I felt so inspired that I put my feelings down on paper.

Take care.......Sue
