To begin on white
with some lopsided twisted thought
a calypso from the past perhaps
or the rock where I stubbed my toe
it is all like chicken scratches
numbering my thoughts click click
faster now they come like black birds
winged and mighty and dark dark

they sing across my la la la
in sharps that pierce my naked longing
and they discord too
rumble like the far left of piano
thunder trouble sad sound
and I listen as if to pick out a melody
that would explain

but I cannot tell you of dark hair
or of scarlet wishes
cannot march you into my cadence
so you can keep time
how can you keep time
I have been trying but my poem slips
and I am off in circles again
falling into rivers
even the waterfall hears me coming
and winks with sunlight for the joy
of tossing me about

Gentle is the wander when I float
on wings of garden roses
and prick my skin to feel the sun
fill up all my surfaces with surprise

and then today I lost my count
and I whispered to the soft air
where where is my lost thought
and it lay me down again
on this white page where I have clicked
my life and said
someday you will see
but for now you must
keep up the good search.

Most Muses are wary of any change, of new awarenesses, of new growth, of new intentions - of all the things that develop character - I often find mine cowering in some dark recess hiding behind yellow caution tape whining, "No, no, go away.  No body's home today. Go away. Go away. La-la-la, I'm not going to rhyme today..."  Well, what can a person say to any Muse when it is sniveling and whining about some triviality of life.  Sometimes you just have to grab it by the scruff of its imagery and shake some sense into it. (Though I will admit, sometimes I have gotten a little beyond cranky with mine.)

Thank you for posting this great poem.

Yes exactly what he said Oh Martie, if this is a re-post, thanks for the post it is magnificant.  Your "chicken scratchings" are words of velvet at any time my friend.

If your muse is "lost"... this must be the product of pure talent... and its quantity is awesome. *S*

if that's a lost muse...gimme some!

I felt like a leaf in the breeze learning not to sneeze at the lifting of fate, but to wait for the beauty of the landing.

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.

Once in the whirlpool, the white captures all the electricity and writes itself...
You shall never lose that which is the largest part of you dear one. TD

I can see your light
And you will always shine
And I can feel your heart in mine

I thought this read familiar in the first stanza . . . even checked the date.
That's okay, though, a mired muse is allowed.
Pull gently, she'll come free.

Martie, I'm sorry that you feel your muse is vacationing, but I sure am glad when you re-post something. I really should go to the archives to read more. I love everything I have ever read of yours. As Lauren said, you always paint us a picture with your words. Thank you, sweet Lady.
