Sometimes they start out beautiful--
as the sirens of the sea,
enticement of the salted sailor
"come ye, enter to the deep..."
I dreamed I had a box of glass
that held the sea within.
So captivated by its charm
I tottered and I fell in deep.
Only to sprout scales and tail--
gills--allowing me my breath.
Tranquilly I swam beneath
until I spied the eyes of death.
There I saw the giant fish--
with flip of fin, change course.
I recognized maliciousness--
so I dived for safe harbor.
I spied a chest with open lid
filled with golden coin
deftly I dived deeper in
and prayed that I not be purloined.
As I shut the cover tight
I found that I was safe again
Sitting in my livingroom
as the phone began to ring.
I answered it with much relief--
Then the nightmare spoke to me.
The school--it was emergency...
My kids, my kids, my kids I ran
through the woods and down the path
straining eyes to see the scene....
yellow dots there in a sea.
"What is this? What could it be?"
"Fear" announced the laughing hag.
For there within my kids' schoolyard
were miles and miles of bodybags.
And I couldn't even scream...
