'Something to hold on to'

It is only when,
in the heart of winter,
and all is quiet,
do I feel most
the ache of time.

And sitting here
at the kitchen table
the world has become
but a distant voice
resonating in the wind.

There is the snow
falling silently
through the sky,
a few plates and glasses
on the counter,
the hiss and rattle
of the radiator,
and in the bay window
sit
     three
              white
                       orchid blossoms.

For weeks I have watched
these orchids
waiting for the day
I’d find them dead,
wilted white petals
on a window sill,
mid winter, yet still
they hold on.

There is more poetry
in their presence,
more poetry
in their persistence,
than I shall ever write.

Having said all this,
there is nothing left to do
but grow
silent.

Oh, this was so quiet. So silent it was flavored with that buzz that takes the place of any disernable sound. And calming. I'm still trying to gather my feelings for this. I'm craving winter now though...this is strong, very strong. Wonderful write. <>DW<>

WOW! Terrific write!

the world has become
but a distant voice
resonating in the wind.

Perfect picture and then:

and in the bay window
sit
     three
              white
                       orchid blossoms.
Great spacing, in the right places!

There is more poetry
in their presence,
more poetry
in their persistence,
than I shall ever write.

Having said all this,
there is nothing left to do
but grow
silent.

Wonderful ending!

I truly enjoyed the read!

I liked how you captured the beauty of poetry in the orchids.  Very nice~

I cannot find the words to express how impressive--and soul-touching--this write is.
