Aunt Mamie

My aunt Mamie
Sits on her porch,
Rocking away the minutes of the light;
She is content in her daily broodings.

The beating sun
Can do no more damage
And her once ivory complexion
Has darkened over time
As the sweat follows the paths
Of tears long since dried.

In her lifetime
She has danced in the rain
And soaked in pain;
She has walked under the stars
And basked under hateful stares;
She has watched sons become men
And daughters become wives;
She has seen others cry
When tortured in discrimination eyes
And heard others call her a “white lie”,
But still she has survived.

The cool evening shade comforts her memory
And causes a momentary reflection
Of black and white….
A simple smile across colorless lips
As another day swallows this black albino,
For hardship and hate see through the disguise.

Marcel

a tough subject handled well
the Mamie's of this world really are stronger than the lies

Excellent write,  certainly is difficult when
one lives between two different worlds...
not thought to be of one or the other...
Requires great strength...Seems that must
have been exactly what Mamie possessed...
