They sleep encircling
twin narrow trunks
of an aging potted fig,
nestled into cool moss that needed trimmed
before they arrived and claimed it
as their napping garden.

Unaware orphans, sheltered only because
I mistook the reflection
from their eyes
and believed myself a giant.

Imagine that.

Is it we think ourselves giants, or is it that we feel the heart to shelter the helpless that through no fault of the own are placed in harms way?

The weakness ( if there is one) is the fear of the pain that comes with parting from such...
