Father Prairie

Give me the prairie, not the farm house,
the meadow of fox and lark, of kestrel and columbine,
no dark contention of the rat and barn owl,
of mule and yellow cat, all striving
for the same space in the dung and hay.
The rows of rhubarb, green tomatoes, cannot stand
to the reality of thistle, sunflower, feral maize,
and the beauty of a tended orchard fails
beside the leaning cottonwood, telling its tale
of brown sandbanks and soft riparian shade.

Lupine and poppy spill the wild spirit
across a hill and down into the glen
while morning glory climbs the trees,
molds the fence rail to a curve of color
that has no straight lines;
there they meet, the worlds,
and in their meeting, where the thicket
makes a cave of lace, a room without doors
for the loam of time to feed them
both will know it is the prairie
that has fathered both, and will again.

A duet -- Ratleader and Martie

Now you both know
that this is going to be
safely tucked away...

thank you
for writing of the prairie
that I walk...

I grew up a farm girl... so I know of the dung and hay and green tomatoes. *S* But I've also seen the morning glories in all their splendor and felt a breeze that added wild to even the most sluggish spirit. *S*

So I sit here, again astounded... at how seamlessly you weave your talents... how perfectly you capture the hearts of anyone lucky enough to read. *S*

This is beautiful. *S*

there they meet, the worlds,
and in their meeting, where the thicket
makes a cave of lace, a room without doors
for the loam of time to feed them
both will know it is the prairie
that has fathered both, and will again.

And there the two brilliant minds of Ed and Martie
meet and write a beautiful duet again.

Just beautiful.....
Hugs to you both

You're the best, Martie -- can't thank you enough for getting my balky muse talking to me again....

Dunno if you nudged her or just made her jealous by sending better lines than she would have given me....but it worked!

I hope so too, D-A...

Sometimes I think it's easier to write with Martie than without her. At least I know that half of it will be fabulous....

Of the many poets and duets I've seen here in 3 years..you both are high on the list of two that are poetically perfect to write together..Both have a gift for imagery and conveying it to the reader with vivid, sharp poetic murals...As with the other duets youve written, each others lines blend together so naturally its as if the same pen wrote them all. Another superb offering from two of pips finest.

Martie/Ed,
Reminds me of the words "meld", "union", and "flux". Where different elements are combined by a re-agent resulting in a solid piece. No leaks here. Great write.
