Seems like yesterday
upon that bike when a tooth
chipped as crawly critters fell
and scurried.

Or two days before tomorrow
when you lay there behind that
curtain, fighting for life...
Losing...

Or was it a week before next month
when I first figured out what IT
was about?

My first time in love..as
Auburn walked the lawn, only
to leave...the heartbreak...
Wasn’t that two days ago?

The time I caught the ball in
the old snotlocker...breaking
it...that was only last week?

Yes, seems like yesterday
when all of you lived not
just in a dream...or an
occasional nightmarish scene.

In the mirror, I see you,
my grandfather...staring back
at me...for it was yesterday,
on a fateful day, the same number
of years ago....when I lost half
of my soul.....

I understand how it feels to be your
age now..and I pray I don’t have to
look out from that tent, into the
eyes of my grandson....

I want to grow up with him first...
And give him the other half of
my soul,  not the emptiness that
I have felt for almost half a
century...

Wasn't that just yesterday?  My,
how time flies...

Barry... you got me good with this one bud... too many are the times I have wondered where the time went and felt those parts of my own soul crumble as one or another was lost...

good piece of writing.. with some pretty deep feeling behind it..

Barry - yes, it seems like only yesterday everytime I see my little girl with her two little boys......umm...I guess she is a grown woman now...but just a day or so ago I could have sworn I saw her skipping rope in the backyard....     hugs, Chris

Barry, seems this wonderful poem of yours has evoked many thoughts in some of us. Seems like yesterday for so many things in my life. Darn, I'm sure it was yesterday that I was my daughter's age.
Hmmm.....

Thanks for all the thoughts to ponder.

Hugs, Marti

Yes Chris,  I know the feeling well...they
grow so fast...

Thanx Marti,  yes,  something to ponder.
Maybe a reason for me to double my efforts
to make the most of what I have...

gyiel,

yes,  a thought to ponder....with mine,
we want them to grow up,  but at the same
time we are losing a very precious part of
their lives to memory...

Both are wonderful things...

Thanx for commenting..

Barry, this really touched my heart.

And yes, it seems only yesterday that my little girl was playing with her dolls.....now she's playing with her own little girls......

But, she's still my little girl...always will be, too.
Hugs to you

Thanx Ethel,  life just moves too fast
at times...  Especially when you look ahead
and then behind...and the behind is longer
than what is ahead...

Yes,  I have watched mine grow too...it is
a treasure...  Part of the reason I write
poetry....to give it to them when they are
grown..

I can't say I know all of this.. but I know the part about losing half your soul... it was somewhere between five minutes ago.. and the beginning of time.
Warn me next time!
This is beautiful.

I know the feeling.  It does seem like my son was burying his Ninja Turtles dolls in the backyard just yesteday.  Now he is studying to go into the ministry.  Of course, I got this four year old little girl here...the greatest surprise of my life.  Oh, the twists and turns.  Makes it interesting, doesn't it?  Lord knows, it makes for good poetry.

OK, I am rambling again.  Sorry.

You know I love your stuff!

Hello Barry

I felt your words deeply and I was reminded of how when my Dad died, I felt like I had lost the left hand to my right.  I still feel that way but my writing has helped ease the pain immensely and the warmth and love felt from people like you is priceless.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful heart.

Take care.......Sue

This is excellent Barry in that we all can relate to it..in one way or another.
"Sunrise...sunset...sunrise...sunset.
Swiftly go the years..."
This brought a big ole lump to my throat for sure.
And  btw...what is the speed limit over there anyway?
Have a great birthday poet sir!

Thank you, Sunshine for putting the light back on this wonderful poem!

Barry, I nearly missed this beauty poem that came from deep inside of you. Stirred up many memories and emotions in me.

One thing is for certain, I have enjoyed reading your poetry yesterday!--and I am enjoying it today!--and hopefully you will continue to post, so that I will be reading your words for many tomorrows!

time is a very interesting thing! life moves too quickly and those we love come and go. they say its a part of life, but all i know is i wish we had each other just a little longer. children grow up so fast. we should treasure the time we have with them, as I'm sure you did! this was a great
write. take care.

So like you to pass out the present on your own birthday...
As far as speed limits go...did save gas...(giggling here)...
Enjoy your day, for the celebration is for the whole man...not just the years passed...easy miles I say. TD
