We Held Your Hand
A Villanelle for Fathers' Day

We hearkened to resounds of heaven’s whispering
Your name, beheld in countenance of sovereign Grace.
We held your hand until we heard the angels sing

In harmonies melodic as the spawn of spring,
Extolling visions of a hallowed time and place.
We hearkened to resounds of heaven’s whispering

A song so sweet, our yearning hearts envisioning
Your dancing blithefully about celestial space.
We held your hand until we heard the angels sing

Songs of release from burdens earthly trek may bring,
Our visions with the stars to see your joyous face.
We hearkened to resounds of heaven’s whispering.

Bequeathing now our hold to end all suffering,
For mortal days so surely wrought in steadfast pace.
We held your hand until we heard the angels sing

One hand in ours, one touched upon seraphic wing,
Our grasp released to bind ethereal embrace.
We hearkened to resounds of heaven’s whispering;
We held your hand until we heard the angels sing.

Nan, you write like an angel.

How fortunate for your Dad to have you with him, holding his hand when he passed. To experience those moments is a gift not all receive.

Hugs and looking forward to seeing you in a couple of weeks. Marti

The harmony in your poem is like a slow dance that enraptures the reader.  I especially liked the yearning and envisioning, and the blessing of your Fathers memory.

Beautifully penned Nan~

Yes you sure did hold his hand, right to the very end.  Wow, I really felt that one!  I remember being in his bed that night Nan, and this brought tears to my eyes.  And his hat - remember you offered to me but I could not accept.  I will never forget that gesture.  As I stood outside that room in the hospital I saw "a family" connecting that cared, and in your own way Nan, you have finally reached the point of acceptance and let go. I know yada, yada.

This was an excellent villanelle (whatever that is, and I know it is something darn hard knowing you), and as I read it I figure it must be my personality you like 'cause it sure 'aint my poetry     but we lub each other right?

I'd like to sincerely thank each and every one of you, my poetic friends - who've taken time to stop by and read this poem.

I wrote this to read at my dad's funeral last year, but hadn't posted in Open until now.  It's been a year, but I still keep some very special personal "Dad stuff" close at hand to remind me of him...

Thank you again...

(big hugggssssssss) God Bless You, dearest friend, and his voice is reverberating still through the chortles of the angels as now your dad is one and he will always sing in your heart as the love of a father and daughter is forever! (sigh) This is a most touching treasure, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Nan, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Hello Nan

Your words were so sad yet so very beautiful.  I was the only one in our family who never got to hold my dying father's hand and I have struggled with that fact for some time but at the same time I don't think I would have been strong enough to cope with seeing him slip away.  Some things just aren't meant to be.
