Lately I've wonder why I can't come up with a good poem lately. Or a good idea for that matter. One of the things is also bothering me is that I can't come up with a original line. Which got me wondering are poets, or writers for that matter, original? Do we just recycle words that we've heard of and process it into our own poems? Do we just run on cliche phrases and words? is it just me who thinks this?

My thought is that the most significant ideas/thoughts are not "original" at all.  I don't think we are the authors of truth or beauty, but conduits.  Maybe the originality applies to finding new ways to say those "timeless" things that need to be said again and again.

I think it is impossible or near impossible for something not to be both original and unoriginal.  Your work is always original for having some of its own differences, but it is also always unoriginal for having things in common with others.

"Even in literature and art, no man who bothers about originality will ever be original: whereas if you simply try to tell the truth (without caring twopence how often it has been told before) you will, nine times out of ten, become original without ever having noticed it."  -C. S. Lewis
