Is it really that bad?

To me, it really can't be as bad as everyone makes it seem.  If everyone's plunging into debt, then wouldn't the debt just balance out?  I mean, say some guy named "Bob" owes "John" $5, but "John" owes "James" $3.  Could "Bob" not owe "John" $2 and "James" $3?  Would it not amount to the same thing?  Except with all the countries here, isn't it just one long chaing that would eventually amount to less than what it seems like now?  Are those numbers kept that way for panicking purposes?  (I probably sound really stupid right now...)
