I was wondering if people in Philosophy would find it helpful to have our topics categorized.  For example,  religious topics under a "Religious" heading,  language-topics under a "Language" heading, etc?   Right now, it is not so easy to see and keep up with what the forum discussed within these "spheres".  But if they were put under such category-headings, I think that would be very helpful to see and use and even continue discussions that were already made within special areas.   There doesn't need to be any removal of what we presently have either.  We could simply have an option called  "Category View" that would show the whole Philosophy forum according to important areas of discussion.

If you are interested,  I am willing to make a beginning to the work and make a categorized list of all the threads in Philosophy.  When I am done, I will post the list and we can all discuss how it works, how it doesn't work, how it may be improved, etc.

Do you think this is a good idea?

That is not a bad idea you got there!! I think it would work out pretty well.. But I think for the monerators, and such people who organize and run this web-site it, might be more to put on there plate. But that is just my guess..

But if they wouldn't mind it I think it would be a great idea to consider.

These thread cross-pollinate so much, that I don't see how strict categorization would improve anything.  For example a thread about "Evolution" might touch upon Philosophy of Science, epistemology, philosophy of religion, politics, and ethics ... and that's before anyone has even replied.

I personally think "Philosophy" is broad enough, and yet specific enough for our purposes here.

Maybe I could ask a question:  What problem do you see that such labeling would correct, or what benefit would it bring?  Are you having difficulty finding previous threads?

Falling Rain,

I'm glad you think so.  It is hard to say how much work it would involve for the moderators, if much at all.  But I thought it was worth bringing up for consideration.

Stephanos,

I think that is the way it is for basically anything Stephanos.  No category is untouched by things from other categories.  A category doesn't mean "nothing from other categories", but it has a chief or predominating spirit or theme etc.  And indeed, I find that the topics of our posts do as well, despite whatever else may come in.   It is by that that a thread would be categorized by.

It is difficult to keep up with what threads/discussions we had in the past in important areas of discussion, when the threads are so mixed up.  The categories would make the "past" of Philosophy 101 readily sorted and viewable here in Philosophy, so people may better know about them, participate in them, and use them to help in the present, instead of much the contrary.

Ess, you are of course a madman, said in the most friendly and truly appreciative sense.  But, I trust you have more of interest going on in your life than trying to organize this rambunctuous crowd. If you really have nothing better to do, try breaking down "The Alley" in terms of vituperative, inane, etc.  But no, I wouldn't expect anyone to go there...

Really the best, Jimbeaux

Here is a bit of a beginning.  Right now most of the categories are only loosely sorted, but when I have time I hope to look over and sort them more thoroughly.

By the way, no thread was over looked.  They are all included all the way from the earliest thread to Great Onion's thread "a higher power"

Wow!

I thought it would be a lot of work for little benefit, but it's actually kinda cool.

Thanks.  If it helps anyone or anything methinks it was worth the work.

Hi Ess!  I'm impressed, too.  Great rational breakdown of categories.  My only question is whether the cross-pollination of ideas, categories within threads is interesting or distracting?

Yes, folks with different, um, agendas, may disrupt a thread and turn it on it's head or whatever.  Makes for a lively community, I think.

Best, Jimbeaux

Ess,

I just wanted you to know that I used it just the other day.  Made finding an old quote in an old thread much easier.

I am glad to hear that, Stephanos.  That was exactly the kind of help I was hoping it may give people.
