You always hear it referred to
in movies about the Romans
from “Spartacus” , and before,
to “Gladiator”.
The question is does it still exist
and, if yes,  how should it now be viewed?

Do angry mobs still exist? You must not watch Cops very often. Heh, yeah they still exist, there will always be problems when large groups of people gather together. What do you think beanbag guns and rubber bullets are for?

How should they be viewed? From a window on the second floor of some fortified building.
