Now THAT I agree with.  One of the unfortunate results of ability grouping was holding children back from having a variety of educational experiences.  I'd be a little disallusioned about education too if I had to do the same basic grammar drills year after year.

Good points.

I think language is one of the areas that needs much more attention than is presently in the education-system.  If people can't communicate, read and listen especially well, that may make difficulties in almost anything.
Now a days English classes seem more about literature and how to interpret metaphors, than how to use the english language.   Why don't we give a better passage for students to cultivate their language skills more thoroughly?  When I went through school there was no studies in the roots of our language either.
Even though I love shakespearean studies, I think some of that gets a bit too much time.  In place of some of the literature altogether,  some greater studies in the english language itself, its history, roots, grammar, usage I believe could help in all manners of learning.  For when it all comes down to it, we all need to read, write and listen at school.  What is the main symbol through which we read, write and listen?  That is language!
