Just wondering what's the best way to pluralize the noun "jack in the box"?

And what implication would this have on the interpretation of meaning, and grammar...

Jack in the boxes?
(one jack, more than one box?)

Jacks in the box?
(more than one jack, one box?)

Jacks in the boxes.
(many jacks, many boxes?)

what's your preference and which one is really correct?

I know, I know, probably not worthy to be posted on philo 101, but it's just to touch the lighter side... And I have seen more absurd posts

Sometimes it's fun to see how brilliant minds respond to absurdity.

Stephen.

actually it depends entirely on what concept you're trying to get across.

your experimental pluralizations each work but each only for the specific case in which you suggested its use.

now here's my question in return:
how do you pluralize the concept of a jack which should be in a box but currently isn't?

jacks-out-of-the-boxes?

hmmmm.

hey - why don't people ask questions like these in the English Workshop!

could be that it's one of those that maintains form through singular and plural usage. I went to several Jack in the Box.

or - you could always add "restaurant" at the end and pluralize that. LOL
