Quilting Kansas

When settlers first came,
Their wives were probably involved
In how the lay of His land
Would look
To God.

Sections marked
By mile, by mile, by mile, by mile,
North, south, east, west.

Then, with a grin, the farmer
Would sow red milo
And golden wheat,
Leaving green pastures untouched by plow,
Virgin grass, bluestem and Indian grass,

While tassels of green-gold
Sweet corn would wave
To God
Red wheat to bless His bread
Dark brown buffalo and
Red Hereford to polka dot His countryside

I think the settlers’ wives
Knew, from a mourning dove’s
Vantage point,
That Kansas was quilted
With hope to feed
The hungry

While pleasing God’s own soul.

Karilea, this is so pretty. I especially like this ending......

I think the settlers’ wives
Knew, from a mourning dove’s
Vantage point,
That Kansas was quilted
With hope to feed
The hungry

While pleasing God’s own soul.

That's just beautiful, Lady.

Karilea - You have a beautiful, pioneer soul. This is lovely. Chris

Karilea--This is great!  Kansas does look like a patchwork quilt from the sky and in pioneer days--only the birds knew that!

There is so much variety in your poetry themes.  Loved this!

That was simply lovely but brother is it ever flat there, (where are the mountains and hills?) looks like miles of miles to me.

Not so flat, Mysteria...only in certain parts of the state.  We have lovely rolling hills from my part of the state eastward...

Now, heading west...well, that's a different scene altogether!

Glad you all enjoyed this...thank you!

I cant imagine you living anywhere else, for this beautiful place inspires your pen in such wonderful ways. Another lovely Kansas inspired Kari write, makes me wonder why its not called the sunshine state

Im still imagining your voice ...
can see the sparkle in your eyes.
I cant explain your power over me
Its understated understood & beautiful.

JM, I think Florida's got that call, don't y'know!  I've traveled through a number of states, I am sure if I were to sit down and root myself into them, I would most likely wax poetic about them as well...or at least, make my attempts.

But there's something about standing on a knoll out there in the pasture, holding your arms out, and imagining the wind will lift you as a kite, to soar over the fields, ... it does lead to dreams...

and ellipses...[that's for Ron!   ]
