She told me once I bruised her ribs
I kicked so much while in the womb.
And yes, it's true I was born sick,
screamed protest of wearing skin--
I guess I never stopped
kicking and screaming and pounding my head
against the walls of being alive.
But funny? The second that I am wished "dead"?
Perversely I flip up my finger instead,
defiant that I'll not be stopped.

Tell me I can,
and I'm sure to fail.
Tell me I can't?
and the only jail
that can hold me
is still my own skin...

you'd look pretty funny without it... lol...

girl, the skin we wear is ours and while we can change the habits it seems to have we can't change the skin....

Trust me. I like skin altogether too much.

Er...other people's anyhow.

I'm just grateful the stuff repairs itself.

All that kicking and screaming does damage.

Very thought-provoking.  I liked it a lot.   I'm even going to send it to a friend of mine, I know she'll really like it.

One of my children was born with only myself and a nurse in attendance.  He was born in a rage.  He even grabbed a hank of the nurse's hair and yanked it out of her head, patch of bloody skin and all.  I can still see the image of him on his back with a cold glare in his eyes as he shook the bloody patch of scalp in her face.  He was well over ten pounds at birth and had his strength amplified by rage.  He targeted her, I think, because he had not needed to be spanked to draw his first breath since he emerged yelling, but she smacked him anyway.

I realized after a few years with him that he had died in the middle of an argument and at next birth was still at the same point of wishing to continue the argument where it had been left off.  Of course, time, circumstances and perhaps people had all changed.

His temperment today is of a lion; mostly sleepy and docile until provoked to anger.

However, he also is very creative.  His art work calms him.

I like a poem that stirs the dust in my memory warehouse.  Thank you for for this.

Umm... as a lover of skin myself (especially that belonging to others of the opposite sex) let me just say that I love this.

The constraints of humanity...never stopped you before!

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Yep, though a jail that's voluntary is called a hotel.....and can be a good thing, depending on the reasons why you volunteer....

I'd always thought my mother completely dismissed the idea of me attending college... only to wonder, many years down the road... if she counted on her saying I couldn't as the one way to insure I did. *G*

So how I do identify... and how I like this write! *S*
