A Heart’s Slate
By Larry Chadwick
She is teaching still

The slate was clean when she was born,
And it was well used when she died.
Caught by surprise without regret,
Bittersweet the loss as I cried.

I thought my slate was proper,
But as she left it was rewritten.
She left as she had arrived,
Her daddy’s heart completely smitten.

So many slates left to impress,
With chance to change while yet alive.
Inspiration found when least expected,
Led by one who helped them thrive.

Loss met once again by gain,
Written down that the world might know,
Even though you are gone,
You are still helping them grow.
June 6, 2003

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

Oh my gosh...your words flow like tears from the heart...both filled with sadness and joy....This poem cannot help but touch the soul of each who read it and see the love that lives within each word rung from your heart...Your love of her will ever live and give her life in your heart forever....I am deeply touched by how you share your slate with us...

Larry, your poems touch my heart so much. I always know to have a kleenex close by.

I really loved your whole poem, but this part sttod out to me......

Loss met once again by gain,
Written down that the world might know,
Even though you are gone,
You are still helping them grow

It's good that you have your precious memories of your daughter.
Heart hugs to you, Sir

Tears in my eyes, here. I am a substitute teacher at the high school level. I often teach at the high school that I attended.  Even as a substitute teacher, I know I make an impact.  I can't walk in the building without students coming to talk to me.  But you know what is the coolest thing about teaching...I learn just as much from them as they do from me.

I loved this...I was feeling kind of down in the dumps today...you brightened my day. Thanks.

Ethel,
Thanks you for your kindness and your faithfull support. Hope I haven't ruined your kleenix budget!

Dixie,
You are always so kind. Thank you.

Helen,
I'm thrilled to settle for that! Thank you dear slick lady.

E_C,
I hope to do exactly that. And thank you.

Patricia,
A wonderful profession. Ginger was passionate about it. 150 students were at her funeral. I admire you greatly. Especially for your substitute work. And thank you for your tender reply.

Lori,
Well I'm glad you aren't bored yet. I still have a lifetime without her. And you know I'm grateful for your support, thank you.

Kellie,
Thank you sweet peas!

Linda,
That means a lot to me as does your understanding. Thank you.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.
