Innocence
By: Noah Eaton
6/5/03

Alone I sit on the steps of the cathedral
Patient as a church on a Wednesday morning
And I hear the church bells at the top of every hour
Clang like steel drums, the steel drums within a witch doctors chanting

Then I think about the keeper of the belfry
How did he ever find his way up there all alone?
Then I think about all the fathers that chase their sons away
How they don't know where they're going, if they'll ever make it on their own
And I hear a boy speak in me...

Please leave my innocence alone
Don't leave me out here in the cold
Will somebody please respond to me
Through the tears it's hard to see
And I don't know if I have the courage to handle this...

Alone I listen to the late summer breeze
And you know I wish the summer could just last forever
And the trees seem speechless, the clouds silenced
Seems every oak is praying
For a chipmunk to make its knothole its home

These tired eyes haven't seen beauty sleep for several weeks
They can't see the mountains through this barometer
It's five past the hour suddenly, and all I hear is the scraping of the windmill
Starting to go rusty since its architect left it behind
Blending with the lost tones of a boy...

Please leave my innocence alone
Feels like I'm uninvited in my home
I'm still afraid of falling
And I believe I will always be
So train me to look away before I fall to my knees

There's only one thing I ask of You
Can't you agree sometimes these lies happen too soon?
Isn't it fair to say to me
That our children deserve more, that they need
All we have that they reluctantly receive?

Here I sit in the plaza ballroom
Watching the little girls perform ballet
Watching how they leap gracefully like swans in reverse
And seeing their glazed china eyes
Leaves me feeling hopeless, so once again I begin to pray...

Please leave my innocence alone
Don't leave me coping on my own
I believe I'm strong enough
So tell me the sun will soon be looking up
And I won't have to be ashamed
When I tell my sister it'll be clear sailing from here

Please leave my innocence alone
I can't make it on my own
Now my heart is bleeding
And I'm barely breathing
And all I want is to be how I used to be...
I want to feel like I used to be...

Underneath your clothes, there's an endless story

All too often the lies happen too soon, but our children do deserve more!

Good write, Noah.

Noah, it appears to me that in life, the more blessings, talents and gifts that a person has, the more trials and tribulations they have as well! You my dear gentle, talented friend are evidence of that!

I will forever hold you in a warm embrace of friendship. You are incredibly special to so many!

BTW, you should buy stock in a tissue-producing company! Word has it that their sales are up from your hanky alerts!
