Piano's Last

Who can fortell the piano's last song?
Anyone, any note, will recall the first tuning,
the wanton sounds bursting out
from the still untested strings,
the harp drawn so taut with it,
keys in balance, crisp, tight,
ready for any touch of any hand...
but the last tune, when is that?
When the keys stick down
and the strings barely hold,
tones mellowed in the years
of playing, of waiting to be played,
who can say then, even knowing
that the last song nears
and playing is an act of love now,
a giving back for honor
just a few notes more,
a few notes more, until

just a few notes more,
a few notes more, until

The want of more...just a few more notes...not seeking the concert anymore when just a few notes will suffice.

Lovely

A pity that the "clunkers" appear at both the beginning and the end of a pianos' lifetime.

Ed....Funny you should mention the life of a piano, for I have one that is nearing its end...but I think as long as I'm around, it will be played.  So I guess my end, will be its end.  This touched me for many reasons, but mostly because of the sensitivity of the poet.

Ed...this poem
holds so much meaning for me...

it breaks my heart
when I see pianos
dusty, run down,
spiderwebbed,

and your finger
touches a key,
and a hollow note
reaches out

to tug
on heartstrings...

yes...
this holds more meaning
for me
than you will ever know.

Thank you for
this keeper.

I have a very special place in my heart for piano music. I so hope that before I die I learn to play. One of my many goals in life. Maybe when we retire and we are living in one place for more then two years at a time I will take it up. Till then I listen to others play it.

Your poem is very inspiring for me. Thank you.

What a beautiful concerto you've written... it falls softly on both ear and heart. *S*

There is something so touchable about a piano... even to those of us who never learned to play. *S* And when it comes to heartsongs... we never quite know what that last note will be... so your ending is perfect. *S* Every note is, in fact. *S*

I suppose just like a used car a piano keeps going back on the market with less value for each progressive sale...and then finally it goes to the piano junkyard...reminds me of when I was a small boy living in Montana and in a large field behind our housing track someone had discarded an old rather beat up piano...we didn't know how to play it but it was lots of fun playing with it...James

Smiling here, as a friend just purchased a baby grand...not a new one mind you, but one built near the turn of the 20th C.
Some notes are meant to last forever, to be cherished even when they cease to be played in real time signature.
A wonderful thought provoking write, Ed. Many levels of play in this one.
* wonderful playing, Ed*
