You are
for whom I asked,
I am not,
that which I needed
desperately to be.

My love is
a butterfly
born out of season,
awakened by the warmth
of an unexpected sun
shining through
a briefly unprotected window;

blinded by the ecstasy anticipating
freedom burning brightly out of time,
hurling itself against the pane,
until released to perish
in the unrelenting truth
of winter's day;

dead before it hits the ground,
no sanctuary, no haven
no other butterfly around.

ice:

I know this . . . I do
relentless shaking of head
yes . . . hurts when ya hit that window - doesnt it?
seems I keep hitting it too

The metaphor right on the mark...simple yet profound.

A sad story, born from wrong timing, or time backwards...the fit of seam not quite right, sometimes tragically so.

Loved the image and the metaphor. How I can relate. Maybe we should start for the window as catapillers..but we don't have the means to get there yet. Great poem. Am loving your work here...for the last 2 days. :}

Make your words as sweet as honey, someday you may have to eat them.

Mr. Icebox,

I read this several times...my gosh, this  poem is wonderful...of course sorrowful as well.  I think I know this story.  I had a love of recent that was most definitely out of season for him though I felt I was ready and tried to fly with it.  I usually don't "fly off" like that, but I did.  Unlike your butterfly, I did not perish, but rather stored the experience in my memory, saved in the File Folder: Lessons Learned.

I loved this!

Were you free to be what you wanted to be?

My love is
a butterfly
born out of season,

So beautiful.......
Yet, so sad......

dead before it hits the ground,
no sanctuary, no haven
no other butterfly around.

since you are new here, you cant know how much this poem and the butterfly metaphor touches a mere moth like me...so I will just say thank you poet sir and place yet another one of yours in my library.

Im still imagining your voice ...
can see the sparkle in your eyes.
I cant explain your power over me
Its understated understood & beautiful.

littlewing ~ Love is a flame which appears to light the way to ecstasy.  The human craving for ecstasy is at times undeniable. It is astonishing when things work and terrible when they do not.
Thank you for reading my poem and for your comments.

Tim ~ That is an interesting comment.  I have to think about that.  Thank you for reading my poem.

Martie ~ Yes, not all life scripts play well, timing in these things is human and so inherently may be flawed.  Thank you for reading my poem and for your thoughtful comment.

apoetdreams ~ Hmmm, maybe, but I think a lot of us would still chronically be out of touch with reality.  (There maybe a reason poetry and pessimism start with the same letter. *smile* ) Thank you for reading and for your comment.

Patricia ~ I think sometimes the perceived bond that draws two people to each other may be particularly strong in direct relationship to the severity of the obstacles which face them.  Simply put, the harder it is to make it work, the more important it may be to try.  I think it is better that you tried than to have cried wondering what if....  All love stories are finite.  All relationships end.  Not all people try fully to live.
Thank you for reading my poem and for sharing your thoughts.

Midnitesun ~ Ahhh, brief questions which could require volumes in answer.  Planning a life always involves negotiation and chance.  Few plans are perfect.  The timing, setting and implementation of each incarnation involves choice; the burning drive to be born and thereby to continue life's journey does not.  Thank you for reading my poem and for making me think. *smile*

SEA ~ A very kind thing to say, thank you.

garysgirl ~ Thank you for reading my poem.  Here's to butterflies returning. *smile*

Janet Marie ~ I hope my intrusion did not disturb you.  I enjoyed the pictures, thank you.

joelle ~ Thank you for reading my poem.  I am glad you enjoy this place.
