I’ve never been to the ocean
But I know how I should feel
I’m supposed to be soothed
Calmed by the rocking waves
Tasting the allegedly salty air
And be annoyed by the seargulls
Whatever they are like

I’ve never been in love
But I know how I should feel
I’m supposed to be happy
Swept up by my lover’s arms
Anticipating sweet promises
And flattered by stolen kisses
Whatever they are like

But maybe my ocean feelings
Wouldn’t be like any poem or picture
Because no one has ever been me by the ocean
Maybe my love would be special
Because no one has ever been me in love

Maybe my ocean feelings would rock humanity’s perception
Of emotion
And maybe my love would change the world

This is a very nice write. You have done a good job of putting the maybes out there. I am looking forward to reading more of your work.

Well, you certainly loaded this one with philosophical thoughts. I like the way you did it. How WILL we react to things we've never done or emotions we've never experienced? Yes, we have people who say "You're gonna love this!!" and can even have the audacity to insinuate that if you don't there must be something wrong with you. LOL! As they say in Spanish, "que cojones!". You show a lot of insight here by realizing that you can't know the feeling of the unknown before you experience it and that it may be much less than you expected or even much more. The poem is honest in its presentation and realistic in it's conclusions...and the fact that you allow for the possibility of rapture makes it a positive and optimistic statement.

I like it....

================================

I LOVE this poem and the perspective you wrote it from.
I had to wait 44 years to see the ocean..its the most amazing experience..it does change you..it becomes part of you.
Very cool write E_A

Im still imagining your voice ...
can see the sparkle in your eyes.
I cant explain your power over me
Its understated understood & beautiful.

I think by how brilliantly philosophical this poem was that you already know the answers to those questions and when you experience it your feelings and love might indeed change the perception of some or many.  Well done indeed.

Quite an interesting read.  We can read how it's supposed to be, but until we experience it, no one will ever be able to fully convey our internal reactions to us...

some are going to feel some fear,
some, perhaps, the wet of tear,
some would definitely pooh the notion
of surf and love, fulfilling an ocean...

I love it when a poet inspires another...thank you.

Being new here, perhaps you haven't taken the time to read our guidelines. Constructive criticism is fine as long as the people specify that they are open to critiques. Unkind or sarcastic remarks with no constructive value are never welcome - or acceptable. Please remember this as you participate in our site....
