I thought I'd done it all
I was no stranger to a fall
I gave my heart and lost a time or two
when the flame of love went out
I knew what it was about
thought I'd be ready to start something new

So, it was a cold surprise
when the tears that filled my eyes
were nothing like the ones I cried before
and all the things that got me through
and eased the pain I thought I knew
didn't seem to be working anymore

(chorus)
Oh I don't know what to do to make things better
I can't seem to find the strength I thought I'd have
And I wonder if I'll feel this hurt forever
how long does a broken heart last.......

If indeed  time is a saviour
Maybe time will heal me later
while I learn how to handle this great loss
For the lesson that I've learned
is the way the heart can turn
into a refuge for the sadness love can cause

(chorus)
Oh I don't know what to do to make things better
I can't seem to find the strength I thought I'd have
And I wonder if I'll feel this hurt forever
how long does a broken heart last.......

How long does a broken heart last? Powerful question! To the broken hearted, it seems forever. As they heal, it appears almost over. When it's over, they realize that they permitted the other to have this crushing power over them. When they take the power back, they become strengthened!

Excellently written! Thanks for sharing!

Blessings!

You know I don't really know you E, except through words, but I love you for this...because it is exactly how I feel.

It's bad enough to lose the love of your life to another after so many years together(a lifetime of love and sharing) and then to try to trust again, when really so many your age carry so much hurt, that they can't give of themselves in the way you think they should. So you trust them and take them for their word, which is really "empty" and holds no promise of a tomorrow...and just takes up more of your time that is passing too quickly as is, and more of your heart until the only solution is to harden and try not to feel.

My problem is I am a "feeling" person, and  no matter how much I try, my heart remains soft...and so my words are a mixture of strength and then weakness, because I can't find my place right now, although I have been trying...when I know alone is not what I wish to be.
I guess I am going to end this day in tears, once again.

(big hugggssssssss) Oh Eric, this is so sadly heartfelt, sweet friend, that obviously is a rhetorical question but all I know is all things must pass and it surely is not forever and as we love again a whole new story is told! (sigh) God Bless You, sweet friend, I send healing hugs your way, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Eric, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Thanks once again Vandana for stopping in to read one of my song/poems. I hope things are fine in India for you.

Icebox, I've heard many people say the very same thing but somehow I feel everyone is different.

Maureen
That is one of the most honest heartfelt replies that I have ever recieved since I started posting here at Passions. It's amazing how you get to know quite a bit about person just through thier words. Yours (words)have always elegantly carried your interpretation of the up and down changes of passion and hurt. You've never been able to write over the top of, or conceal your feelings very often, so, the result has been poems you've written from your heart about the truth and consequences of striving for true love which all too often can end up with aspirations being shattered and these poems, written with refined gracefulness have endeared your readers to you. Not just me but hundreds of readers can relate. I'm so glad you have such a friend in poetry and that you share that honesty and passion.
When I can touch someone with my words as is indicated by your reply then it makes everything about writing worthwhile because that connection is what we are all striving to accomplish.
When a man finally rests his soul on your heart and remains there until the infatuation of a new love turns into that mellow love of lasting friendship, then he's going to be one lucky man. So far you have only been exposed to compromise situations since you've lost the love of your life but I know of many that have found someone who really cares. Sometimes it takes a few tries and makes you wiser but happiness happens comes to those that never give up. I personally think that you have to realize that nothing is going to be the same as it was in the beginning and you have to start with a completely new outlook with an attitude for adjusting to everything a new life and love brings as a challenge........BUT, those open warm deep feelings you have are being sought by tender hearted men everywhere. I see it happen everyday.
I can only wish you the best and earnestly encourage you not to consider your past as baggage you don't want to carry but as experience you want to share. I thank you for sharing as you have so many hundreds of times.
Love to ya  Eric

Thank you Noah and I have a tendency to agree with you....There's always some romance left in life.

Hi Ben....I can't agree completely. I think with the right attitude you can resolve the past and move on.....Life is so refreshing when one moves on.......Learning from the hurt isn't always a bad thing. Thanks for the reply.

Catalinamoon Nice to hear from you again. I think you can get over a broken heart but I just don't know how long it takes....Thanks for the read and the response.

Well Eric,
A spectacular write and a wonderful thread. I do value the honesty and integrity represented here. And M you know you're the best in my eyes! I love a die hard romantic. Here's to you both...all the best.

If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again.

You know when I read this I wondered if you had sent it to Maureen as she "owned" this from the first stanza.  You caught her heart and her loss so well.  Eric, to gift someone something that validates their feelings and acknowledges their pain is probably one of the greatest gifts someone could ever give another.  I too have read the pain she feels and this song is now hers thanks to you.  I only wish I could hear it - if you do it, can you send me the link please?

Eric, this is one of the most beautiful
songs I have ever heard. It is even more
special because it was written with
the compassion and care of a very loving
man.

Like Sharon, I believe when someone gifts
another person, especially one they see
hurting, with a special gift like this it is
priceless. A treasure that will be cherished
by the receiver, I'm sure. I could tell that
you really touched Maureen heart.

Thank you for doing this for our friend.

And, Maureen,  a hug for you, too.

Hugs,
Ethel

ethome - my what an understanding, tender write. Thankyou for writing this. So many of us have had our hearts trampled on, wondering if they ever will heal. You know what? They can and do. But it is each heart on their own time. Very well done dear poet. Maureen....take heart dear lady. Chris

So much to say about this post. First? It is pure heart and soul, and a gift of  gentle friendship and understanding.
Secondly? I can't help but hear a timeless song in this, one that is bound to outlast the sorrows of many broken hearts.
You are a absolutely wonderful and compassionate soul, and it's a great honor to be posting on the same site as you.
And Maureen? Yes, you bleed pure heart and soul and love with every write, allowing your reader a moment to reflect on the sad side of romance, yet somehow remain hopeful. At least that's how I feel, even when enveloped within the sadness.

Once again, I can't thank you enough E, for your kind words and for all those who have responded.

I think if I hadn't "found" the internet back when... I would have become a shell of myself. And even though my poems will be up some days and down others, it is the memories, almost all good, that flood me or events occurring that take me back in time...and  bring out the sadness or wishfulness of those what ifs.

And I know my life will never be the same again, that change is inevitable, and I am doing my best to accept and flourish in it.

You have captured the pain so very well that I could feel it...Having been there myself I know the pain lasts a lifetime...I think that love doesn't have an on/off switch so when you do give your love it stays given no matter the pain losing it may cause....A new love can come into your life but you love them differently so the pain from the heartbreak of before will remain. I felt this song deeply and I too feel that it needs to be put to your talented music. Thank you for saying it so perfectly.**hug**

Eric?

I think you answered your own question without realizing it

you did learn . . . you did

For the lesson that I've learned
is the way the heart can turn
into a refuge for the sadness love can cause

Sad as it may be the heart is a strong organ even though it feels like our weakest now - doesnt it?
Withstands many attacks and here -
you seem to be coming out on top

Time - yes - grrr that time . . .
amazing btw xxoo
