*~~~*
I've got a Southern drawl
I talk so very slow
I like to use words like "ya'll"
though other words I know

Some say my voice sounds sweet
others say it's sophisticated
I think it's kinda neat
this drawl the South created

I was born in Alabama
Florida's where I grew up, though
I talk kinda like my Mama
definite Southern roots I show

"Where you from", folks ask me
when my drawl they hear
I just say I'm from the South, you see,
'cause both states are sort of near

Both states show "Southern hospitality",
All the South has this fine trait
We may talk with certain originality
but, I've learned to think it's great

Us folks down here have lots of fun
lots of happy people are found
A question often asked is "Have you heard a good one?"
lots of jokes always going around

Our jokes you ought to hear
they would be real funny to ya'll
You'd grin from ear to ear
Hearing 'em told with a Southern drawl

Love this Ethel..
I know Chris will smile when she reads this as well.
They don't accuse us up here in Canada of having a slow drawl..
just the opposite..they say we talk too fast!

I'm a displaced Yankee living in the south with a Cajun. We're really fun to listen to. I still have a slight NY accent, with a few ya'lls thrown in here and there. My husband, well, it's just indescribable really. A cajun talks like no one else in all the world. And my daughter has a southern drawl, replete will all the "I reckons" you can stand.

Karilea,
you'd sure get a mouth from the South
if you heard me talk.  LOL
.
.
Nancy,
I hope Chris does like this. I looked it
up just for her. LOL  And I figured that
ya'll talk real fast. I was just kidding her.  LOL
.
.
Maureen,
I'm  NEVER  mistaken for being from the
North LOL   But, when I was in Germany a long
time ago, some of the people there thought
I was from a certain part of England because of
the way I pronounce some of my words. I try to not
say a lot of things the way I'm expected to by being
from the South.  LOL
.
.
Anne,
your daughter probably didn't know which one
of you to talk like. LOL I say a lot of "I reckon's" too.
My daughter has lived in Massachusetts
for a few years because that's where her husband
is from. She talks a lot different now than she did.
.
.
Alyssa,
that's cute. I'm always saying "Hey ya'll,
I'm fixin' to go to do this or that. LOL
.
.
Well, ya'll, if I had a microphone...well, I do have a microphone, but if I knew how, I'd let ya'll hear my Southern drawl. No kiddin', I really do have a BAAAAAADDD one...or is that a good one?? HeeHee!!

Let me tell ya'll somethin'.....
A few years ago I worked at a K'Mart store up front at the Service Desk and also as one of the head cashiers. I had to talk over the microphone a whole lot. The town I lived in had a very large Naval Base that had people from everywhere stationed there. Just about every day someone would come to the front and say they would like to meet that girl with the Southern voice......
Sometimes I would act like I didn't know who she was (and keep my mouth shut), and other times I would really lay it on thick.

Thank ya'll for reading and replying to my
silly little poem. LOL
Heart hugs to all of you
Ethel

How ya doin', fellow Southerner? Good to see
ya. You got a gfood joke for us? LOL

Thank ya'll for reading my poem.

(smiles) Hehehe, my mom said I used to have a southern drawl because I grew up a lot in southern Illinois, but then after I got a guidance counselor when I was depressed and got my communication skills improved, it pretty much all disappeared! (kiss on cheek) I would love to hear your exciting stories, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Ethel, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Things you wouldn't hear a Southerner say:

We don't keep firearms in this house.

I thought Graceland was tacky.

No kids in the back of the pick-up, it's not safe.

Wrasslin's fake.

Honey, did you mail that donation to Greenpeace?

We're vegetarians.

Do you think my hair is too big?

I'll have grapefruit instead of biscuits and gravy.

Honey, these bonsai trees need watering?

Who's Richard Petty?

Give me the small bag of pork rinds.

Deer heads detract from the decor.

Spitting is such a nasty habit.

I just couldn't find a thing at Wal-Mart today.

Trim the fat off that steak.

Cappuccino tastes better than espresso.

The tires on that truck are too big.

I'll have the arugula and radicchio salad.

I've got it all on a floppy disk.

Unsweetened tea tastes better.

Would you like your fish poached or broiled?

My fiancee, Paula Jo, is registered at Tiffany's.

I've got two cases of Zima for the Super Bowl.

Little Debbie snack cakes have too many fat grams.

Checkmate.

She's too old to be wearing that bikini.

Does the salad bar have bean sprouts?

Hey, here's an episode of "Hee Haw" that we haven't seen.

I don't have a favorite college team.

I believe you cooked those green beans too long.

Those shorts ought to be a little longer, Darla.

Elvis who?

Be sure to bring my salad dressing on the side.

I love to hear a southern drawl. Whenever I return to Ontario after an lengthy vacation in the southern states, I am asked if I'm from that area! I pick up accents so readily that before long, I am talking like the natives!

Enjoyable morning read, Dear Ethel!

Linda

What? Who me?
A suthern drawl?
Why I don't talk
Funny at all!
It's other folks
That sound quite strange
One thing's fershure
I'll never change.

This is delightful, garysgirl... thank you, ma'am! *S*
