Distant the howl, the cries of night
from the thicket beyond the glow
of a single light as moths buzz
endlessly and careen headlong in
a suicidal dance.

A large, somewhat slender creature
of numerous legs sits still, waiting
for the snare of tender wings.

Beyond the door, left slightly ajar,
the figure of a man sitting still within
a worn and ragged, but still soft
chair.  Dozing?  One might think
if only a casual observation.

No, the mind is not still.  Awake,
walking through a meadow.  Hearing
the faint roar of a distant fall.  Crystal
is what he always called the shimmering
waters as they cascaded into a clear
pool.  A place where only a chin, eyes
and sparse hair would be seen above
the tranquil waters.  For in this place
within his mind, his zone resided.

Zone, one might ask?  Surely this cannot
be real!  Scoff, they certainly would, those
who knew little of this zone or that which
might be born within a sacred place.

“Of each, the laurels rest ‘pon thy throne
that words might live alive, though alone.
For in the mind of waken thought a wish
shall come to thee, born of a forehead’s kiss.”

Ahhh, a twitch seen....Might there be
a waking moment before the moon’s rise?
Stirring slightly, grasping the ancient quill
of another,   perhaps a muse of sorts.

Dabbling into a blackened well, absorbing
words, metaphors, lines of verse yet to be
carefully laid upon the delicate parchment.

A smile escapes his lips as the sound of
distant waters cascading from a crystal
fall....are heard within the silence of
a mind as larks sing upon the fence
and the chitter chatter of a squirrel
distract only those who cannot
hear the waters...

Ah, Barry, this is a wonderfully touching write. Want to read it again so I put it in my library.
Now I must hurry and doze off ... 1.25am!!

I see you there, Barry, in your chair...the zone flying around you..."No, the mind is not still."  Loved this introspective and spirit filled write!

So much, the mind is not still, as to paint a picture within a picture.
Excellent ambling of the poet...done in silk. TD

Barry~
This, my friend, is a masterpiece in verse.
It's good to see you and your poetry again.
An absolutely incredible write.
