It's nice to know you can count ... and rhyme.
Good one.

Sunshine,
No problem, thought I would get censored again. I am very good at it appears.

Wow that didn't take long by the way!

       Mike

I hope you will not mind a short friendly protest on my part to all concerned:

This is the general poetry board, and as such I feel it should be open to all forms of poetry, just as it is in most sites. People have their own minds and they should be able to use them. By putting limits on what they can and cannot post on your site, especially in the all purpose forum, you put limits on how people can express themselves, compartmentalizing them [if I may have liberty to invent a word ] I ran into a similar problem on another site a while back, and they agreed with my point of view, and now they allow posting without any form of censorship. I would hope you will decide to do the same. But it is your site, and according to the laws of this nation, as a private site you may choose what may and may not be posted. So I can do nothing more than ask.

Well there you have it. That is all the protest I have in me. I am not an argumentative person by nature, and I write this with only the greatest respect for both the site, and the staff, I assure you. Have a nice day

Hi Mike, I am sure no one minds a protest poem. But as many on here have learned, the reason for guidelines, especially in the open forum is because there are readers and posters of all ages allowed on here.

Therefore "tact" should be used. There are many ways to express oneself in words that doesn't need the foul or sexual language. In fact a good writer can get that same idea across without ever using an expletive, which really is very commonplace today.

So you see, other than suicide, just about anything can be expressed here, you just have to know which words "not to use".

And I think many would say that the reason we do post and enjoy it here, is because there are set guidelines that keep this home of poetry a comfortable place to live.

Thanks for this chance to thank Ron and all the moderators for their jobs well done.

Maureen

Ya make me laugh, Mike! I'm gonna go read some more of your stuff.

Just between you and me, I have a feeling I've missed a very talented fellow.

You are right that open is open and almost open is not.

I too have had some difficulty with language here, on occasion, because I can not incorporate the restrictions on an emotional level (from which most of my poetry draws its energy).

I can not agree that all ideas can be expressed here if only the writer will be skillful enough; that is both illogical and linguistically incorrect.

Words have real meaning, real cognate power, real flavor, and substitutions are just that: lessor choices, dimished values, alternative views.

However, the concept of a (mostly) receptive community of poets that generously welcomes new poets (not necessarily young), seasoned poets (not necessarily old) and poets who may have incompatible philosophical, religious and/or political beliefs, that welcomes "us" with open arms, is a rare concept in my limited experience.

Perhaps half of what I write or have written has no place on this web site on any of its forums and I have had to learn this by making mistakes in posting.  I seem still able to learn though, and while editing a single poem to diminish its statement offends my muse, she has none the less grudgingly admitted the value of the intellectual excercise.

A poem re-written to meet any standard of language correctness is a diminished poem.  However, the practice of language selection is good excercise and in the long run may lead to improved skills.

I have changed a few poems here to make them suitable for posting; are they then lesser works of poetry which do not say what they could have said - in my opinion, YES.  Is it worth that step to post a particular poetic statement in a lesser form? Sometimes.

The bottom line for me is that I find great freedom here, and an amazing array of talent from whom I constantly learn.  To be allowed to participate in this adventure within what are really broad guidelines is, for me, a great gift.

So I do not agree with the guidelines 100%; well, that begs the answer to the ancient question: "What should you do if you meet the Buddha traveling the road of life?"

I wish you well.

My only response is that "open" doesn't mean the open that some people think. If I am not mistaken, ( and I could be) open means it is a place where all ages can read and participate, thus the rules and guidelines.

There are other restricted forums, age wise, that allow for other language.

Everyone:

Looks like I stirred the pot here a little bit, huh? Thanks everyone for your responses, and all of your constrasting opinions.
