Swiftly,
a blanket of hastened doom
drapes the lighted way
as scurrying heels sound
a staccato beat upon the
frantic heart...

Silently,
as bitter dread coats the
tongue in need of a perilous
scream..

Slyly,
death’s shadow lurks the
corner of darkness, as
each breath is stifled...
till....

Suddenly,
as the gloved hand
wrests, as lungs strain
against the strum.  Life
drains upon the cobbles
smooth.....

Soon,
a mere cooling parcel
of grain’s weight, lightly
carried...As death’s eyes
peruse the prize of
a stalk...as a flicker
tattles the whisk upon
shod feet....into darkness..

Hello Barry

I had such a very vivid image of Old England town on a dark foggy night with the shiny wet cobblestones reflecting in the moon's eerie glow.  A man in a black cape and hat was lurking, in pursuit of his next victim.  I actually went to such a place when I was in England in 1999.  I went on a Jack The Ripper night tour and it was very very scary.
I loved seeing it again through your vivid imagination.

Take care......Sue

Very nicely written, Barry - Your mastery of imagery is surely prevalent in this piece... metaphorically speaking, Magnus PI...
