Piercing summer day, where I bathed my feet
stairways lead to a cool basin beneath
Cephalu on its northern coast
exposed in the sun...mild roast
could not resist not placing a foot
entered the past through a marble nook.

Hot summer day that drove me along
away from Palmermo's darkened archways
away from an algae infested shore
in search of more limpid waters
into the chalky white atmosphere
at the site of an old basin we had appeared

A Sicilian friend who hosted me at twenty-nine
served me handmade bread, its taste so fine
attributed to longevity her father said
and recollected the days when he met
Canadians on service call..to liberate
how he narrowly escaped more gruesome fate...

Young and old meet in harmony, or collide
like any youth..there's the touch of the past
but the future needs to be lived free of bonds
specially as the young travel to more 'attractive' urban finds
an inexorable flux that gradually leaves a parent
behind....

hot summer day where I bathe my feet
lie worn limestone slabs
on which the women beat a timeless wash...
their children have now migrated
and closed a window to the past
how long do such memories last?

Everything's on the move one way or another......I think the memories last long after our final sleep.....
Excellent material and well presented!

Vivid recreation of past memories which will undoubtedly remain with you until you take your last breath. It was as though I was viewing a by-gone era through a series of daguerreotype pictures in sepia tones...

Wondrously expressive write.

Warm mornin' hugs,
Linda

Ethome,

if only I knew now I could keep these memories then..from this life.

Earth Angel,

now that I am a product of migration..this was a dedication to that moment

Brad,

Thanks for sharing...there should be more of these 'cameo' type poems in the future..not all at once

Passing,

it was wow being there...where time stood still

Those memories last forever ecrivan, though I don't reply as often as I'd like I do read and enjoy your words and you know of course that this one touches deeply..
