Crying never
crossed my mind
it was laughing
that concerned me
sermons have a way
of doing that to me

I hadn't cried even as
those around me did
saying our goodbyes
by his deathbed as he lay
withered and white

It was inevitable
he'd hung on longer
than we'd expected
and I'd made my peace
with it long before

In the church
I bowed my head low
to hide my smirk
as the priest played
the crowd the way
priests do

As the sermon closed
and the casket rolled
I lost my compusure
at the silliness of it all
I looked around
embarrased to have
laughed

But as a hand touched
my shoulder in sympathy
I realized that I was crying
and felt the warmth
of tears roll down my cheek

Nothing had prepared
me for the utter finality
of the site of him
carried away packaged
in pine, decorated with
flowers and bows

A gift to be placed six feet under Death's tree

This touched in places
I cannot describe
right now.

But I do understand.

Raph, this also touched places in my heart that I can't say now. It brought back memories of my husband's funeral. Every time I think about him, some actions of his I've learned of since he died come rushing to my mind.

I was surprised by the title...
but your words fit it well.

I have been to many funerals, relatives, friends and neighbors in the last 10 years, and no matter how you think you will react or hold your composure, the memories bring emotions to surface, that often can't be controlled.

I cannot express how much this poem evoked so many feelings in me for my Grandma.  Raph, you're just too good of a writer and I share your melancholy.  I'm saving this~

Raph:

even in death . . . you find beauty . . .

You know what this one means to me
as I know what this means for you . . .

and yes . . . that finality . . .

I do understand this very well and you know that . . .

a brilliant write and I am sorry also
he is proud of you - I am sure of that

This has me in my law class with tears streaming down my face.  After having several deaths recently, these tears are close to the surface as usual.  I was fine at my patient's funeral a couple of weeks ago.  I sat at the viewing refusing to cry, until they closed the casket.  Then I went to the burial with regained composure.  I refused to cry until they placed the casket into the ground, at which time I lost it.  The pain from years past and from present never seems to fully go away...

and you put it quite eloquently...

Failure isn't failure if a lesson from it is learned ~ KS
