Heaven’s Tears
(A veteran’s letter to God,)

Dear God, I heard you crying.
Attacked in their sleep, the innocent dreamers.
The ones awakened by nightmare like bombs.
All that was left were the pleas of the screamers.
I was there God, I heard, I cried too.

Dear God, I felt you crying.
In the jungle’s enveloping mud laid my friend.
No one could stop his youthful departure.
His callused hand clung mine, shaking, until the end.
I was there God, I felt, I cried too.

Dear God, I saw you crying.
The bullet had erupted within his heart.
I was disgusted by the sin I had committed.
But that was just one, that was only the start.
I was there God, I saw, I cried too.

Dear God, I know why you were crying.
I had no future with such a haunting past.
Raindrops gently tumble from the heavens above.
Please God, Stop! Let these tears be you last.
I was there God, I experienced, I died.

There are no more tears left to be cried.

Sheesh
I have a hard time thinking the big guy is crying over us
Maybe shaking his head ruefully in disbelief,
But he wouldn’t be crying himself.
That, tears, is man’s plight
just like all the causes of the tears,
he’ll let us solve them ourselves
wonder if we can.
