state of confusion

My son and I walk the aisles
in search of chow for Simon and Misty,
cats we adopted from this place a month ago.

We stop to see today’s creatures in need of new homes -
several felines, all looking petrified in their smelly,
unfamiliar surroundings.

The strays are given made-up names and birth dates,
implanted with tiny locator chips, then rendered sterile.
Females have shaved tummies, males are castrated.

We notice a black female Persian with sea-green eyes
named Ruby. A three-by-five card fastened to her cage
says she’s somewhere between ten and twelve,
(which means she’s probably older); her owner had died
(suicide, the rescue worker whispers);
that she's friendly and loving.

My son sticks his finger near an opening,
she reaches out a paw and touches his hand,
then rubs against his open palm.

I am anxious to leave now,
overwhelmed by the sadness these animals radiate -
a mean-looking Siamese,
two calicos who’d like to stay together,

and poor Ruby.
My son asks if someone will adopt her.
Not likely, I think,
but say
someone will.

Oh, I do know this moment, and the sinking feeling that the poor creature's days are numbered.
A sad but honest look at pet shop visits.

Cor.

We visited a pet store last night...and
they too had three cats lying in cages,
waiting to see if someone would take
them home....Yes, someone will (I hope)

Thanx for this...

Corinne...I know the heart from which you write, the heartbreak of all the strays, the neglected, the ones who wait, and the wanting to take them all home, to still a child's questioning.

This is how we ended up with over 20 pets at one point in time... I can surely relate...

Corinne....nice write..makes ya think...it's similar to older kids at orphanages...sad.....I know Balladeer and LongJohn used to get free kittens from the classified ads to feed their Pythons....they're both just inhumane people...yanno?

Thank you all for your kind responses!

Nan, I know what you mean, I was so tempted to take Ruby home. Still thinking about that silly cat. But I've already got two cats and two kids to care for!

Toe - those boys wouldn't really hurt a hair on any cat!!! Silly boy!

(tears fall down my cheeks) I get the same expression staring through the kennels at the Denver Dumb Friends League, sweet friend, I would almost want to be free than be tucked away like that, at least I can attempt to find an identity! (sad sigh) I truly pray Ruby finds a loving owner, sweet friend, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Corinne, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Hi Corrine, I’m not sure if we’ve met yet...

The first two lines alone, put a smile on my face...

A nice talent you have, to make this poem so easy to read...

Nice Work!

Take Care,

Richy
