When I was just a little girl,
too little to see we were poor,
it didn't really matter much,
still doesn't matter any more.
'Cuz my mother was the queen.

We didn't own a TV, not even a black and white,
and the fridge wasn't even a fridge but
an 'ice box' that was empty some days and nights.
But we always went to school with a lunch,
mom was set in her ways in that.
The milkman kept bringing milk to our door,
didn't care mom was too poor to pay,
he just kept bringing a fresh bottle
and dropping it off, every single day.
My big sis Loretta heard about this TV game show
'twas called 'Queen For a Day.'
She decided right then she wanted mom to play.
Sis wrote them a letter, they sent two tickets,
and she and mom went to the show the next day.

Well, Mom won the crown, but at home we didn't know
'till the neighbors ran over to excitedly say
"Your mom is the Queen today."
I laughed and said, "Yep, and my daddy is the King"
But of course daddy had long since gone away.
Imagine my surprise when the cab pulled in,
and the Queen Mother stepped out
carrying fresh roses and a tremendous grin.

Yes, my Mother was the Queen, if only for a day.

This is a true story. (FYI, 1950's era show)
*****
Although my mother and I had many arguments and didn't get along so well, I hope her soul is resting comfortably wherever it may be, and that she remembers the day she was the Queen.

Dear Kacy, this is a wonderful story! And so well told, that it contemporaneously moved me and made me smile.

Your words show that in your heart she was Queen for more than just a day...her children always saw her as Queen....Beautifully written....

I remember Queen for the Day - with refrigerators or stoves, or the necessary "missing item" needed to make a household run.  My goodness, what memories you have evoked!  I am sure your Mother was a most gracious Queen...both in your hearts, as in life...

You were truly blessed!

I remember this Kacy, and that it was a true story...one of my favorites you've told us.
My mother recently became a grandmother for the first time, and is now referring to herself as the Queen Mum.
Hope you're having a great day...oh and...stay away from that psychadelic bean dip!     Unless of course, you've got some to share...

Nancy, careful or you'll re-date yourself.

Yes, we were in desperate need at the time, and it just worked out that the basics were soon provided, courtesy of that TV show.
