She staggers with a gentle roll six tricks into the night,
loose behind the day's handful of 'ludes
looking just a little down on luck.

She'd been a beauty in the years she remembers in her dreams,
it shows plainly through the lines etched deeply
by make-believe and memories of other lines of nameless men;
she and time had never managed to be friends.

When morning comes, she'll ache alone;
she'll shake in runny daylight
dripping through a greasy window, on a face
trying not to throw up on the floor;
she'll smoke a joint, read poetry and cry
about a lover from too many years ago.

After dark, when the tears are dry,
when it's time to make the rent,
if the phone won't ring she'll do the bars
and work short time again.

Good luck or bad luck
doesn't matter to her now,
she's a hundred dollar hooker
working hard and dying in a twenty dollar town.

Well written and sad. I can imagine many live this way, or worse.

The thought is heartbreaking to me.

Your talent is enjoyable for you seemed to create a situation which seems very real.

Hugs, Pat
