Where Did It Go?

It seems like only yesterday
when we seemed so much younger
When so much was within our reach
and we still had that hunger

When life was still forever
filled with so much left to do
But now the fun of being young
we seemed to have outgrew

What happened to those young at heart,
why did they have to leave?
What made us choose to bury such
a warm fulfilling need?

What does it take to steal away
such innocence and bliss?
What do we have to do to bring back
feelings that we miss?

Where did it say that we would pray
that we could start anew?
And do the things we always dreamed
but never did pursue

To have the chance to right the
wrongs and take away the pain
If only to go back in time,
and act not so in vain

The choices that we make when
young, will always travel with
They help to tell the real story
leaving out the myth

Of who we have become
along the journey of our life
The challenges we’ve overcome
the discord and the strife

And now when we are older
we must stop and look around
The house is getting quieter
you hardly hear a sound

It used to be a home with noise
that filled our ears with bliss
I day would never pass without
the need to hug and kiss

It won’t be long until the leaves
start falling from the tree
The bark will start to crackle
and the branches start to heave

The mighty oak that once stood tall
will lose it’s final grip
and start to lean over the side
as roots begin to slip

Will someone please just tell me
why our children had to grow?
They’re slowly getting older
and will leave before we know

We only get one chance in life
and I just need to know
Will someone please just tell me this
Where did the time all go?

I ask myself that often. This is a good sentiment. The metre was a little jerky and the rhyme sometimes forced but it spoke well of your thoughts.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Well, yes, time does pass and we grow older.  Our hearts, however, can be renewed, refreshed, and forever young.  At least I feel so.  I had lived under such a dark cloud in my marriage...16 years stolen...my twenties and thirties.  Now at 40, I am like a kid again.  Free of my marriage, I am like wide-eyed child.  Oh yes, sometimes I tire. I don't have the energy I once did.  But my heart, my dear, is full of hope as it was in my youth.  I look at things with a fresh perspective, albeit naive and innocent...as much as possible after the experiences of my life.

Richy, this weekend, go to the park and swing as high as you can. Pretend your toes can touch the sky.  See if you don't feel a little younger.

I love your work.

Passing Shadows you are just so generous with your support... Your tops in my book!

Kethry, thank you so much for taking the time... and for the honest critique... I have only been writing poetry for a short while, and I have much to learn... thanks again...

Patricia, I am so happy to hear that so much has been lifted off your shoulders... I hope you get to realize all your dreams, and that you find genuine happiness...

Oh, and by the way... I took your advice and got on a swing this weekend... I was swinging so high, it almost did feel like my toes could touch the sky... unfortunately, the chain broke... and I came crashing down on my head... ouch!   I can’t say that I feel much younger right at the moment... but it was fun while it lasted though... thanks again...

TD, I love your wisdom! Thanks so much for spending the time to read and reply...

Smiles back at you!

Carol Thank You so much!

just a junkie, thank you for your kindness!

Oh, by the way... Patricia... I was just kidding about falling off the swing...lol

It was as if you wrote the pages of many of your readers personal books of life!

I read that you are new to writing poetry! Well, my dear poet, you are starting out of the gate with style! You most assuredly have talent and I thoroughly enjoyed your poem. So much truth and honesty.

But please realize this, we each have within our grasp, the proverbial match that can get those home fires burning again!

Warm hugs,
EA
