My Mom Deserves a Raise!

If any occupation is the most misunderstood,
I’d have to say “No question there.” It must be motherhood!
The pay is low, demands are high, and training’s on the fly,
It’s not an easy job, though there are many who will try.

If mothers had evaluations, here’s how mine would rate,
There is no question in my mind, just what would be her fate;
Not only would she get high praise for all that she has done,
She’d set a grand example … raise the bar for everyone!

Attendance would be on the list, “Exemplary!” I’d say,
Since I was born, that woman hasn’t missed a single day!
Oh sure, there may be days when we don’t meet or even speak,
But I know I am on her mind, each day of every week.

If teamwork were a question, then I’d have to say, “She’s great!”
She’s never missed a chance to help our family relate;
Her guidance keeps us focused, with her firm but sweet approach,
Her methods, kind and loving – she’s the most committed coach.

Small details and attention span?  A given, that’s for sure,
I’d have to say “Top marks for that!” There’s no one else like her!
She sees beyond the obvious – she’s never missed a thing,
It matters not the circumstance, she sees most everything.

Her quantity of work if I was asked, is just “Superb!”
She does far more than I could say within this little blurb;
She always puts in overtime, without complaint I’ve found,
(Her clock must have an extra digit, once it goes around!)

Her quality of work could not be questioned, “She’s the best!”
She’s accurate, precise and thorough – passes every test;
Her follow-through is what I love, for always she is there,
Dependable … reliable, through all her love and care.

Her judgment might be queried, and I’d have to say “It’s great!”
She makes decisions fairly, when she’s faced with a debate;
Her wisdom comes in many forms, and many different ways,
(I only wish I’d listened more throughout my younger days.)

Communication is the key … I think she wrote the book,
I’d have to say “Stupendous!” whether written or a look;
Her words, expressions, listening skills, have taught a lot to me,
I swear she even has a hint of mind telepathy!

She’s conscientious, flexible, she’s giving and she’s wise,
She’s tactful, diplomatic, always quick to compromise;
She’s diligent, resourceful, yes she’s all of that and more,
If I would rate my mother, here’s my final thought and score.

Her overall performance is “Outstanding!” I would say,
I’m proud to call her mine – she is the best in every way;
I hope she knows I mean each word – this isn’t idle praise,
For who she is … for all she’s done … she sure deserves a raise!

YES.

I had my babies 18 months apart, and I will never forget how exhausting those early years were. There's a story I like to tell, about a phone conversation I had with my mom when I was having "one of those days."

Completely exasperated, I'd called her to ask, "When does the whining stop?"

A brief pause and her reply?

"You are 32 years old, on the phone whining to me now--it never stops!"

Yes, I got her something nice Kit!

Thanks for this'n. It's a timely keeper.

Kit, what a beautiful tribute to your Mom.
I'm sure she's just as proud of you as you are of her.
God bless you, sweetie.

what a grand tribute...and i would relate to the line about wishing that you had listened to her more often throughout your younger days, except that i'm too stubborn to admit so

Wow, Kit! You're getting quite prolific lately!

If you are any indication of how good your mother did, then I agree she is magnificent!

Happy Mother's Day, Kit!

Kit, excellent poem... Yes, my mother is all that and more. Thank you for reminding me.

This is very sweet, Kit... and yes, your mother must have been doing something right, with the way you turned out...

I wonder if someday I'll learn to take my mother's "judgement" more seriously?  Well, still in my younger years, so I'll give it a little more time.  Don't tell her I said this, but mine deserves a raise, too.
