Thrice a Coward
matt keach

Sprawled above his headstone:
"Once, twice, thrice a coward,
for heart and mind and soul unwind
through bribes his restless heart resigned"

Waiting cost him much of his dignity,
Once, twice, thrice delay,
for maybe the odds will fall in his favor
at the dawn of the next today.

Is there reason enough to doubt
that his mind though so devout
would fall under ruthless pressure?

For wind makes little change of earthly fissure,
and every tornado that he fell upon
made rock to sand and sea to pond.

Thus through stress and torment, is how he felt,
How could he bluff on this hand so poorly dealt?
When the gamble made his life the price,
Once, twice, thrice a coward.
