It was the virtuousness
of her environs
that kept her on “that side”
in the beginnings

she was, probably still is,
to some,
a Peggy Sue of sorts,
the good girl who never traveled
that lane,
knew what the flicking porch light meant,

and cast side-ways glances at the boys
in the leather jackets,
wondering.

She had marveled at “those” girls,
for even while on the same level as they,
she was so much younger
in so many ways,
in so many facets, that she was the elder
but not by the calendar,

and she yearned for what they had,
for “those freedoms” which her own
apron-waisted mother
would not tolerate,
so she skipped rope just the same
as had been taught her

and kept the questions in her breast.

She still denies her escape by first marriage,
for she had bought the lot of the fairied tale
which would soon allow fate to wag at her,
finger to her nose, and hated him
when he said he was glad he took her away
from all she knew

and led her down a path she still regrets.

She had always been told
she was smart, so when she smarted enough
from the finger-jabs of fate,
she took hers by birth
and fled to take care of love, encapsulated
as she was in the bonding
and escaped yet again.

She believes she is somewhat better off today,
sometimes,
as there are those times where she wonders
if lonely in herself is better
than the second trappings she draped upon herself,
as she can still feel the pull
of the righted apron strings,
and sometimes answers

to Peggy Sue.

Now, she looks at the hands that had held
the double Dutch rope,
follows the line of thought to her friend
there, at the other end,
whom she had wanted to be just like,
seeing her hands at the other end,
hearing, again,
the laughing derision of freedom

and penned with finality the sympathy card

for the family of her friend
who had laughed
at Peggy Sue.

Deca girl..this is a different style or type of writing for you dear.
This came from way deep inside, somewhere...
I know a lot of women who make up the Peggy Sue's of this world.
They learned by living life the 'right' way.
The 'good girl' way of their mothers.
Yes..I know this feeling..of missing out, wanting to...have fun,
with the 'in crowd'.
But, I wouldn't trade places
with the girl at the other end
of the skipping rope for anything.
Excellent write Deca my friend.

WIDE SMILES...

"Peggy Sue got married--end of story!"

Somehow? I don't think so...

This is an excellent write, because, as children, I think there is a bit of Peggy Sue inside of us.
