it is quiet tonight
I find menial things to examine
brew up some stale bread and minestrone
on the gas range
I shake the orange juice bottle
and fill a glass
I read 170 pages of Celine
in relative obscurity
over the period of 5 hours
clicking on the machine
once in a while
to see if you’re around
but youre not
and it all emits such silence
even the stereo
dare not speak
above a whisper tonight

soon I’ll pack it in
after struggling
with this page for a bit longer
I’ll cast off the remaining lights
and wrestle your absence
into a dream
to only be awakened
by the promise of your voice

The title pulled me in...
the poem kept me.

Karilea - if I whisper, will you listen?
