She is only a female child of ten
but now she is without a limb
and worries that she may not find
a husband at all, whether mean or kind
because an Afghani land mine
blew off her right leg
making her feel...
Defective.
How sad.
Not just because she lost a limb,
but because she has been made
to feel her very worth as a human
must somehow be tied to another human’s
acceptance of her as a potential mate.
Another casualty of mankind’s
inept struggle to understand LOVE
and climb to a higher plateau?
So does Shakila now put her faith
in the Kabul Limb Factory,
instead of God?

God...Allah...Yaweh...

Whatever we may call
this personal higher power,
how many limbs
did you watch us make
today?

*

May ripples of LOVE
become waves of PEACE

My heart breaks that we put such stock in what is on the outside and forget the person is on the inside looking out...This poem needs to be read by us all and maybe will pass on a well needed lesson....STUNNING WORK!!!

Thank you for reading and commenting on this one Karen. It is heartbreaking to read what happened to these innocent children. It's even more heartbreaking to me to realize how many girls/women see themselves as unworthy except when viewed as a partner. (Same goes for boys/men, too.)

Brings us right back down to earth! Such a sad subject matter, as always when you're speaking the truth and horrors of life.

Thank you. It is people like you who help to restore my faith in human nature

Kacy...Powerfully and compassionately said.  How many limbs?  Brought this to a sad and fitting closure.  Without answer...
Nice job on this piece Kacy.  These are the images we must remember and learn from.

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Kacy, it is tragic to see those in most dire need denied of their health and life quality, sweet friend, this reminds me so much of Chicago Bears legend Walter Peyton and how he was a generous giving man and for a long time he enrolled on the waiting list to get a transplant but he died before he ever got it! (wipes tears) My prayers are with Shakila and her family in hope finally her prayers are answered and she also may hopefully get a new limb, God Bless You, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

an excellent commentary on a tragic truth,I'm also grateful for people like you who care enough to try to make a difference.

What a very special person you are to write such a meaningful and sensitive story... (I consider poems short stories to).

You should be very proud of yourself for bringing an awareness to something so tragic, and so important...

What a voice you have!

Your warmth, just like your namesake, keeps the helpless, and the meek, protected and out of the darkness... always providing the light they need, to ever guide them, to a better tomorrow...

Bless You MidniteSun,
