a little bit o gold is blue
shiny shoes to hide the holes
keep 'em planted on the ground
cushioned by the daily news
nonchalance to hide the shame
waiting for a paper sole
catch the latch before it clicks
a grin and shrug
"ain't got no change"
the stranger, he don't know my name
and no, he won't remember face
he'd have to look me in the eye
but they're all quick to look away
like I should be quarantined--
contagious with a lack of green
"a little bit o gold is blue..."

mama knew the trick of starch
a touch of crisp to pleat a suit
that other one that daddy left--
he wore the good one to his grave.
Mama had to paint his name
(that rock of his ain't paid for yet)
but his place is always kept
plastic flowers--they stay fresh--
Mama chose that linen suit
she said it would wear nice in Hell...

I had a job soon after that
collecting for the books--
until I paid off Daddy's debt
and caught a beatin' by the crew--
guess I got busted by the spread
of points made by that underdog--
yanno it never could be me
makin' love to Lady Luck
(a little bit o gold is blue)
The only thing I got is screwed...

I guess I'll take a walk downtown
and watch the buses passin' by
sometimes the ladies toss their lunch
all neat, there in the paper bag...
I hope I get my favorite bench
it's nice there shaded by the tree
I'll take some time and read the ads
I just might find somethin' for me--
a place behind a shiny desk--
keepin' books for them that know
the worth of my experience...
yeah, that pie will be mine too...
and I could buy a real fine suit--
a thread of gold in navy blue--
I'd take the ladies out to lunch
and have myself a smooth man's crib,
and mama's ash could turn to dust
like the lady that she is
'cause she told me, she cain't die--
we live on in Jesus Christ,
and my mama didn't lie,
that woman had real class...

And since today is lookin' fine
I think I'll walk, enjoy the view,
and you know I'll pay you back
when that ship o mine comes through
I'll remember all my friends
and you'll be proud of me, you'll see.

A little bit o gold in blue...
a bit of change o destiny...

I do believe
Bert would be proud
that his blues just turned
to gold...
