Jean handed me an apron
as she told a small, middle aged guy
wearing a Crimson Tide ball cap,
that I would be helping tonight with dishes

'What's your name again hon?'
she asked sounding hurried, gathering
hot, wet silverware from the dishwasher

'Mike, my name's Mike...but Jean
I may not be the best guy for this job',
I tried to protest, still holding the apron
and wondering
how I got roped into this in the first place

She waved me off, heading back into the dining room,
'You'll do fine hon, Joe will show ya what's what
and I'll put ya a beer on Merle's tab after work'

The guy in the ball cap, smiled and put out his hand,
'Hi. I'm Joe'

I gave up. What the hell, I'd do some dishes
If some old drunk could do it,
then so could a top shelf sponge.

'Ok Joe, let's get this show moving, I got places to go',
I directed, tossing the apron into a bucket of dirty towels
'You wanna wash or dry?'
I asked, hoping he'd say dry,
but he laughed instead

'We don't wash or dry Goober, the machines do',
he was near hysterical over my supposed guffaw

'Then what do they need us for Sarge?', I jibed

'Why don't you work awhile
and maybe you'll figure it out',
came a woman's voice from behind me
and I turned to see Rita,
her apron pregnant with freshly picked corn
'You can start by shuckin' these
and put that apron on 'less
you wanna be ruinin' that expensive shirt'

Did anyone read THIS?

Goodness, Dunc...
you have this character down...
but you could never be a sponge!
You're just a porch sun dog!

THANK you for the wonderful read[s] [as I see there is another] so HERE I GO!
