~*~

Falling as the sands of time,
Thru' the hourglass of his mind,
Memories lost forevermore,
As shifting sands leave fading shore.
Lost in thoughts of mass confusion,
Reality lost in life's illusion,
An empty shell where once did dwell,
A man of pride who tolled his bell.
His voice once rang, clear and bright,
A man of brawn and righteous might.
Gone are the posts that marked his life,
Now dreams are lost and naught is rife.
To watch him slowly slip away,
Yet ever further every day,
Saddens me beyond belief,
My heart is heavy and full of grief.

~*~

JM ~

Yes, you are so very right. My former father-in-law had Alzheimer's Disease and it was incredibly sad to watch this once vital and intelligent man just waste away and no longer recognize his loved ones. My heart goes out to all those who suffer from this disease--and to their families who painfully watch their loved ones fade away...

Sorry to hear that you know of this pain.

Warm hugs,
EA

This tragedy so clearly descript in your write. The only saving grace, is that as the light slips away, there is no pain, just a quieting of mind.
Lost a loved one to this yesterday.

TD ~

My love and compassion, I send to you and your family. Yes, what you say truly is a saving grace. When the disease is advanced, they feel less pain and quietly slip into a world of their own.

Warm loving hugs,
Linda

How painful is this?

My father-in-law is slowly slipping away from the present and now, we noticed on Sunday, even the past is beginning to fade.

Breaks all hearts ... Marti

He slipped away from us, some time ago. He is now with God and soaring among the stars free and whole. I remember him as he once was before he was robbed of his health, mind and dignity.

Linda,

What a gift of writing you do have.
You handled this with such grace and described so well, we knew that of which you speak.

I, too, knew one with the disease..and it is incredibly sad to see them slip away... heartbreaking!

(tears fall down my cheeks) Oh Linda, this is terrible how this affects so many, I am actually working on a new poem that isn't related to Alzheimer's but about a sad memory in my childhood of a person I know who got in an accident and his face was scarred deeply and everyone ignored him and even his girlfriend and he ended his life, and how it saddens me how people miss out on the true beauty in someone and how I wish I could have done more to save him back then! (wipes tears) I pray something can be done against this, sweet friend, God Bless You, they're all in my prayers, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Noah, what a tragic story you related. How terribly, terribly tragic. I shall be looking out for your poem when it is completed.

You have said it; it is a touchy subject.  However, you handled it with tact and feeling.  Such subject matter can only benefit by airing in poetry and discussion.  Ken

very touching piece, I too have had a loved one with that dreaded disease My grandmother died from it 3 years ago. You have done a great job discribing the heart ache of watching someone dear to you fade away.

So deeply touching. What you experienced is one of the most challenging pains in our lives ... to be there without being there. An anticipation of death and as you say, it is almost unbearable.
Very beautiful, intense poem.

Ken ~

This poem flowed straight from my heart and needed very little editing. I wrote of truth and real emotion and the words just came. Some poems that I have written, I have labored over and have made edit after edit. It seems this one just wrote itself!

Thank you for your thoughtful response.

Warm, spring morning hugs,
Linda
