Jean carried the plates
Loaded with fried chicken and the 5 vegetables sides
Out to the kids table and dropped them in front of him.

I’m really not sure who had the stranger grin.

Jean was sure the kids eyes would pop
When he got a good look at the vast quantity of food
And the kid seemed to be amused that this was all there was.

I chuckled to myself and watched the kid dig in.
He ate like he hadn’t seen food in a month
And I wondered just how long he had been hungry.
And if he was riding the edge of a few dollars
In his journey from where ever he was from
To wherever it was he thought he was heading.

I’d been there a time or two
On the run from myself or some lady I’d met
That in some way thought she would change
14 hour work day habits into 9’s
and settle me into something like a human
relationship instead of making love to work
and forgetting all else when times were tough.

What had it been?
I counted back the weeks since I had walked out
Saying I was taking a few days,
Heading to Savanna to soak up history
And relax.

7 weeks later here I sat in Rita’s
watching this kid eat more food than anyone his size
should be able to eat
and enjoying it.

Well…
It beats sitting behind a keyboard and pounding out data
For others to twist into the lie of the day
Or use as fodder for the next Coup in the boardroom.

When the kid had swiped the last of the chicken gravy
Off his plate with piece of biscuit and pushed the plate away,
I saw his grin of satisfaction and knew he had pride.

I motioned Jean over, let her fill my cup and whispered to her
“Don’t you need a dishwasher tonight?”
And nodded towards the kid.
She just grinned and smacked my hand
And walked over to the table the kid was just leaving.

Good reading.  I liked especially the paragraph about been there a time or two and the one with the Coup in the boardroom..

Enjoy watching this character being formed and interesting how so few words can say so much as to who he is, yet..leaves me wondering what more he is about...

Fun reading, looking forward to more.

Hugs, Pat
