Married Again

see, its like this
theres this chick from the north
who’d come down to stay
and right away
we were terrorizing the decent folk
with our wanderlust
and recklessness literary yearnings
it couldn’t be helped
I can assure you

she had heard of me
and my 16 year old bride
some time earlier
while reading one of those periodicals
of the highest inclination
and had decided she would have me
regardless of my marital displacement
well, once the restraining order was in place
her feet cooled a little
and she bide her time
burning wooden nickels
and sewing shut the pockets
on denim purses
as we all know
I lost my poor little chicken
at the supermarket one fateful day
and vowed myself to a life of debotulism
out of respect for my wee lost donkey

well the news reached low and far
and that creamy gazelle in the woods
was on a plane and various pills
within a few short hours
I was lodged at my desk in the chubb chap
typing some romantic dribble
when there came a knock
that made me reach for my gun
someone called out “housekeeping”
and I unbolted the latch
there she stood
over five and a half feet of pure adultery
we rogued our way through the temple
spilling dishes and turning grenades on end
we stayed inside
for 22 days,
and for 22 nights
we burned candles like they were documents
bathed in red wine vats
until our skin stained
until
symphonies of sound
resounded through her silken charms
her almond ivory touch
like mercury

after this introduction
and aligning of spirits
we were ready to assault
the tempo of the skeleton nation outside
she was loaded
on booze and bonds
and so we cashed some and bought a Challenger
I found the sleeping bag
and boxed the vinyl
we left LA in a flurry
well pressed in my white linen and denim
and she, flying her colors in a flowered cotton gown
we swung through Arizona
one hand on her thigh
the other on a quart of whiskey
she sang like a banshee
all the songs we could invent
about love and loose ribbons
meadowlands and canyons
the deep wells
where our secrets lay still

somewhere in New Mexico
we found a pastor
fondling a horned beast
and forced him
to marry us on the very spot
where he stood, semi-dressed

for the first time
on that very night
we stayed sober
and danced under moonlight
like a diamond carouselambra
chasing starlight and wild iguanas
in the peppery autumn air of the naked wastelands
where we had surrendered
our arms, and hearts, our lives

and burning brightly like a phoenix
we seared into ash
a fusion, cindered and released
onto the deserts shifting anima
never again to be seen
(any lower
than the shoulder of Orion)

the gray little donkey turned up
one day
in an opium den somewhere outside
Bangladesh
she had been scooped up by a motorcycle gang
in the meat department
and set on a path
of inprobability
she jumped ship near Vancouver
later in the year
and slept in the belly of a cargo plane
that one day woke
in Cairo
the rest, is the stuff of lore
and will be saved
for another day

Steven, your pen forever writes of the wildest adventures....at least most of them seem a bit wild compared to mine.

OK, some of us are waiting for the chicken/donkey sequel.
