Passing Mr. Lee en route to the buffet
I imagine his stratum of convivial
laughlines as my constituency.
Not donned an apron at the entry
of his business, abandon at egress.

I convince myself the swell'd saucers
that are his china plates as diminutive
due to frugality, discounts, a pleasing
modesty like Macleish's poems;
"Dumb
as old medallions to the thumb."*
Not the tight invention for derailing
the thin wheeled brassy from repitituous eats.

As I pince the steam steeled offerings
I envision Gloucester fishermen,
their ever slanted world, ruddy
features framed in teeming yellow,

Marlboro men who've quit tobacco,
their magic lariats all in one
motion uproot to limbless
the hung drycleaning of marbled rarity,

Shaven farmers in spotless overalls
mounted as Hannibals atop green,
gleaming John Deere tractors
whose clever hulls sort the
red, green, yellow and white legumes.

I pay,
I leave.

For two blocks to the traffic I'll
visualize the hope of the fortune cookie

and not once
look near to the polluted river

nor wonder
why this precinct needs no dog-catcher.

* A line from Archibald Macleish's "Ars Poetica"
Bon appetit!

You cannot read part of this - each stanza
needs the other to bring the story full circle...

again, an excellent read...
taking me where I've never been before.

Seymour....by all means load up a basket (it may however make a case)

Sharon.....thanks for checking it twice, I fear that happens a bit with my scribblings.

Sunshine....hang on, who knows where the ride will lead.

CPat......thanks for your valued opinion.
