Santa Ana Wind

Why do I care about this wind?
The moon cares nothing
as it quarters up the sky,
naked, sharp as a test pattern,
unimpressed by wind or even
by the sun that flares out there
beyond the surfline, doesn’t care
about the spray thrown back
like gold confetti, waves
blown vertical as they strain
into the dessicating force of it.
And how does it, this sudden
blazing wind that roars
the day out, bring me peace?
Out there it leaves the mountains
shining clean at thirty, forty miles,
the snow white-orange along a sky
that’s dialing into blacklight blue;
and though the mountains do not care,
when this bright sidelong moon is going,
if I wake, I’ll hear the end of it, this wind,
hear it dropping down the scale to silence,
and the rising morning will not care,
nor will the wheeling shorebreak
take a pause from grinding shells
against the sand of other shells,
but I will know, and part of me
will wait here pensive, ‘til it blows again.

I enjoyed this one! Growing up in So Cal, I felt those winds many times, and recall how they blew away the fog and kicked up the ambient temps by 20F in a matter of minutes.

Very beautiful ... the wind sings magical tunes, sometimes it howles, but it always speaks to sensitive hearts .... as yours.

Ed...I love it when the Santa Ana winds blow.  I remembered a little poem I wrote years and years ago about them...forgive my repeating it here...I like the depth of yours much better.

Santa Ana Sky

The thought is tossed
in and out of flower
The mood is blown
with the wind
The sun traces my dreams
and races with them
to the gate

Sing the sky
Play the grass
All the clouds
fluff gentle
on this day

...and I like the joy of yours better -- dang, I think I just blew a perfectly good idea for that duet....

I've been to Santa Ana, though I didn't get to hear the wind which you describe here so beautifully.

adding this to my library.

and I enjoyed yours too Martie.

Well Mr R Leader...

I really like this...I have to say you have a distinct style - that's usually a good thing. It is in your case at any rate...

I have known the winds, as well
called the Santa Ana...
a line where God shows hell,
then lays them low, exhaust their spell...
yes, I have known
Santa Ana's bell...

Ed:

I am not familiar with the Santa Ana winds
but here you have accurately painted
winds I do know and miss and I truly
understand this:

And how does it, this sudden
blazing wind that roars
the day out, bring me peace?

It just does . . .

Hi littlewing -- it's actually a chinook wind, if you live in an area that has those, you'll know it on sight.... but a chinook into an area that's already a desert -- so suddenly the temp goes up 20 degrees and humidity drops to zero, wind at 40-60 mph....

Your images are so vivid that even those of us who didn't know it now feel we do... and whatever it is that makes you care... I'm glad. *S* Excellent write! *S*
