Someone to talk to, and someone to share
Someone to trust, and you know they'll be there
They never desert you, in sadness or pain
And stand by you, whether you lose or you gain...

That someone forgives you when you fail to write
Or if you need comfort in dark of the night
You may only know them from typing onscreen
But a friend is a friend, even if they're not seen...

They are precious and few, and if just one is lost
From misunderstanding, some pain is your cost
The spot that they held becomes empty and old
And nothing hurts worse than a friendship grown cold...

A friend is a diamond that glitters with time
The giving and taking adds depth to the shine
But sadly, some are a one-sided affair
To vanish entirely into life's cold thin air...

But don't be downhearted and don't hide away
Some new friends are waiting to meet you today
And some will become to your heart very near
To carry through life, growing close year by year...

Those are the friends that we all hope to make
The ones we can talk to, who give, not just take
When found, they will bless you with laughter and more
So, I've answered my question, of 'What are Friends for?'

Accept these small gifts from my gypsy heart  ~~S~~

Yes, you did answer your question in a most honest way, mentioning the good of finding and the sad of losing, and the hope there will be no end to those true.

Wonderful poem, reads well. Enjoyed.

Sunny - you write of much wisdom about friends. Sometimes some go, but the close ones are always there it seems...

Sunnyone~ Thank you for this, and these words especially~

They are precious and few, and if just one is lost
From misunderstanding, some pain is your cost

A friend is a diamond that glitters with time
The giving and taking adds depth to the shine
But sadly, some are a one-sided affair
To vanish entirely into life's cold thin air...

It's obvious that you understand the true meaning.  *snif*  *hugs*
