Paper Man

I hear the paper man
go tossing up the street,
now down the street,
count the driveways
where each paper lands
like cellulose mana
tied in cotton string.
The paper man’s
my hero; now I know
it will be day soon,
maybe the very day
that takes me off to
somewhere, anywhere,
makes the bite of it
be somehow less,
the distance less,
the road to happiness
a little shorter for the day.
I admit, I take the paper
for the cheap insurance,
so I’ll know, even if they
all should cancel,
all the neighbors, he will
have to drive this street,
throw out one paper,
let me know that soon
the night may end.

Ed...time is such, that when waiting for day, the sloosh across the grass, that sound, even more than birds, can bring anticipation of morning.  Love this thought, as the paper man has also done this to me.

I like this Ed...
brought thoughts of crisp mornings
and damp grass...

of long ago fresh news...
and sunrise...

Ed,

I am getting a little better at poetry reading and understanding more. I find a few layers here, at least that I can relate to. All say, uh huh,  that too, is part of my reality, then or now....

I love your writing, Enjoyed, Pat

This is kind of like a Norman Rockwell moment.  A day in the life~

Really nice images to go with the underlying feelings!

When I was 12 I got 3 cents for every daily paper and 5 cents for each sunday paper I delivered.I had to wake up at 5 O clock every day ride my bike to the drop off point to fold these papers and pack them on my bike. Then I went home and ate breakfast and went to school. This was a ledgendary way to build character in a kid.I did it for 7 months and lost intrest in improving my character.

Back in college, I helped some friends with their (very large) paper route... I never dreamed we were delivering hope for the day. *S*

This is excellent... with a wonderful perspective! *S*

Ed,
Well written. My take on this may be somewhat more sad than others', but, what I got from it was sadness and solitude. To anticipate the paper man making his delivery
reminds me of Robin Williams waiting for his name to be published in the phone book, and then declaring, "I'm somebody now!", only without the humor. Maybe I'm just having an off day.

That's it exactly, Doc.... layin' there alone and mumbling about this and that, too late to sleep and too early to get up.... and not really wanting to do either because the things you really want probably won't happen today anyway.....
