Why did it have to end this way
why do we hate each other
after years of joy
years of crying
a little pain
but always a comfort
to hold you
talk to you
now I wonder
do YOU ever think
about the good times
do you ever cry
when you remember something fond
or a time when you needed me

I wonder

Was it all a front
did you ever love me
or was I reason for you to leave
the unbearable grasp at home
a way to be free
did you always hold
the hatred in your heart
that comes out now
when you see me
hear me
think of me
did you fight the urge
all those years
to leave
run and never look back
it seems the truth
never touches your lips
so to answer me
would only further confuse
my tortured mind
never answering the question
if you ever really loved me
the only thing that comes to mind
now that we are at the end
looking back
at all the wasted years is...

Why?

Someday you'll be able to look back and see that those years weren't wasted....

Sometimes you never have that question answered.  Sometimes, it is best not to answer it.  Such a small word - such a small word with such a big meaning.

Thank you all for you kind remarks. This relationship is over...I have gone on and found a great woman that makes my life truly complete. I just had a problem with a lot of issues that happened towards the end and try to rationalize sometimes. But the whole thing is one mistruth on top of another. Lies and deception seems to be the only thing that grew over the years...not love...hey I feel another poem coming on...lol...thanks y'all...Rod

I have questioned many times the very same thing that you've written here. It's good that life goes on, isn't it?

Rod, this is a very good write. I can understand
the need to rationalize the happenings of a
past relationship. I also have a wonderful
Love in my life now. He and I love each
other with all our hearts, but the hurtful memories
from the past still come to mind. I do know, though,
that time helps them to come around less
frequently. That's a good thing, huh?
Hugs,
Ethel

I have that same question, "Why?"  But I am sure he (my ex-husband) would not answer this question for he killed me with silence.  Now, I have arisen again, and so will you!  Believe it or not, this too shall pass.  Keep telling yourself that, and definitely keep on writing.  I often find in my writing, revelations come upon me...revelations that may have not if I had not been pondering my next line.
